Cold and Flu season is upon us.

Here is my favorite list of natural products available that we employee in my family, as well as helpful tips for the cold and flu season.
One thing to know when you have decided to choose something “natural”, to help yourself is that you must jump on it quickly, when you are first aware that you don’t feel good.  Putting together a kit now, before it’s needed will be helpful. Natural remedies and products in my opinion are fabulous, yet often need time to work as well as dosed often.
 Our immune systems are powerful, able to keep us healthy, and often don’t need anymore support than common sense applications such as, washing hands often to prevent the spread of germs, get out in the sun for about 15 to 20 minutes per day for natural vitamin D, eat a balanced diet with a wide variety of colorful fruits and veggies, don’t over extend yourself, and get plenty of rest.  The immune system is depleted with stress, therefore you may have noticed that you tend to get sick after a major stress event.

When it comes to your immune system vitamins A and D take center stage.  Doctors claim that many people are vitamin D deficient, leaving them at risk.  Vitamin D if not obtained by the sun, can be effectively increased with a good quality cod liver oil with the naturally occurring vitamin D and A still present.  (Some companies strip the oil of these valuable vitamins, adding back in synthetic versions).  There are some fermented versions of these oils that might be interesting for you to look at by Green Pastures company. 

There are other supplements my family is partial to and reach for at the first hint of cold or flu, such as Congaplex by Standard Process Inc., as well as Silver Spray.  Systemic enzymes such as Zymessence are a favorite as well.  These enzymes are taken on an empty stomach.

Though the cold and flu are viral in nature, you may want to have the information about Garlic.  Garlic has been traditionally used to fight bacteria.  If you purchase a pill form, be sure to find NON deodorized Garlic.  

Homeopathic remedies have traditionally been used for centuries.  Some remedies for flu are Oscillococcinum.  Oscillococcinum is safe for children and adults.  It is most effective when started very soon after developing a fever.  Some claim that it helps to shorten the duration.

The Homeopathic remedy Influenzinum, has been used in Europe for years to assist in prevention.  One suggestion for use is as follows:  Adults take 10 pellets and children take 4 pellets a week for 4 weeks and then once a month during the flu season.  Refer to package instructions for different dosing recommendations to treat flu-like symptoms.

Other natural products traditionally used for immune boosting are: Elderberry, Echinacea, Vitamin C, Vitamin Zinc, and Vitamin A and D as mentioned.  Echinacea can be used every day, and has been considered helpful by some to maintain a strong healthy immune system.  Research shows that the alkylamides are the most important compounds for activating the immune system.  A quality Echinacea product must contain the active alkylamide compounds from the right herb species – Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea –  and from the correct part of the plant, the roots.  L-Glutamine in the dose range of 5 to 20 grams seems to have some immune building benefits, states the book by Dr. Robert Atkins.  

Other herbs you may enjoy using are Andrographis, Holy Basil, and Echinacea combinations.

  I find that zinc lozenges are helpful in soothing sore throats.  Should you be a fan of saline nasal washes, please remember to be safe, by using only distilled water in your solution with your sea salt.  Distilled water can be warmed in the microwave to the temperature you desire – not to hot!  I tried it cold last week – awful!  If you need directions on ratios of sea salt to water please contact me.

Don’t underestimate the ancient remedy of chopped onions, worn in a cloth tied about the neck.  Onions draw bacteria to them very effectively   You may find that breathing them helps to alleviate some symptoms.  As if you didn’t feel disgusting enough while sick, now you can reek of onions.  It keeps the family away at least, so that you can rest.   Rest – something our society doesn’t seem to let us do.
